(A Message from the Katrina on the Ground Steering Committee)
Katrina on the Ground and Katrina on the Ground Part II, an initiative organized by college students and grassroots activists, is in partnered with a 501(c)(3), 21st Century Foundation which has served as fiscal sponsor for the undertaking to implement a plan of outreach that harnesses the collective power of students within the African American community and directs it to provide immediate, tangible recovery assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina (Katrina). The implementation phase of this initiative began in March 2006. Katrina on the Ground recruited, trained, and delivered to serve, scores of students who provided assistance to persons directly affected by the hurricane, as well as the over-extended organizations and relief-workers who continue to tread the long, rocky and seemingly lonely path to rehabilitation for the region. Each leg of the effort was documented on film to preserve the history of this most important, monumental initiative. Katrina on the Ground Part II will continue the initiative into the Summer of 2006.
The original Katrina on the Ground Spring Break initiative received national attention with articles in Newsweek, People, and Crisis magazines, and television coverage on Black Entertainment Television (BET), as well as countless media hits from the various local news stations, and local newspapers. The national recognition augmented the positive response that created the need for Katrina on the Ground Part II. The KOTG, Pt. II application can be found below:
